Greenwich field hockey falls to Amity in Class L tourney

November 8, 2018

Generating scoring opportunities wasn’t a problem for Greenwich High School in its Class L Tournament field hockey matchup against host Amity on Wednesday.

Unfortunately, for the Cardinals, scoring was.

Eighth-seeded Amity advanced to the Class L quarterfinals with a 2-0 win over ninth-seeded Greenwich in an opening-round game. Amity (13-4-1) visits top-seeded Cheshire in Friday’s quarterfinals at 2 p.m. Greenwich finished its season with a record of 13-6.

“We had nine penalty corners in the first half and five in the second half, so we had a ton of scoring opportunities,” GHS coach Ally Orrico said. “We had eight shots on goal in the first half, but their goalie (Ana Carney) did a really good job. She had a great game.”

Junior forward Tess Csejka scored both of Amity’s goals. Her goal off a breakaway with 16:54 remaining in the first half gave Amity a 1-0 lead. The score remained 1-0 until Csejka tallied off a scramble in front of the cage with just 2:54 left in the second half.

Sophomore Jorja Pastore made 12 saves in goal for Greenwich, which was paced defensively by senior Katie Walko.

“Jorja really stepped up for us,” Orrico said. “She is fearless and super aggressive. Katie Walko played a great game. We maintained possession and had control of the ball for a good portion of the game, we weren’t able to finish. It was one of those games, where we created a lot of chances, but couldn’t finish.”

Orrico credited senior Zoe Metalios for creating a lot of scoring opportunities and sophomore Charlotte Gans for her strong overall play. Metalios, Paige Finneran and Samantha Chabot served as the Cardinals’ senior captains.

“I’m proud the season we had,” said Orrico, whose squad reached the FCIAC Tournament semifinals prior to competing in the Class L tourney. “We had high hopes in the state tournament, so we’re obviously disappointed. But this was a good, feisty, team and I’m already super excited about next season.”
