Security Beefed Up at Liberty Bell
PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Federal authorities tightened security and increased armed foot patrols around the Liberty Bell after receiving a nonspecific threat Wednesday.
FBI spokeswoman Linda Vizi said the threat was serious enough to warrant increased security but there was no information about when such an attack might occur.
``This afternoon we got some unspecified information that there may be an attack on the Liberty Bell,″ Vizi told The Associated Press.
She declined to discuss details of the threat or its source.
A terrorism task force made up of the FBI, other federal agencies, Philadelphia police and Pennsylvania and New Jersey state police were determining whether there was any veracity or substance to the threat, Vizi said.
Armed deputy marshals may patrol streets in the area of Independence Mall and the nearby Federal Courthouse, as they did immediately after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, U.S. Marshal Roger Arechiga told The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Several armed rangers patrolled around the building that houses the bell Wednesday night.
Vizi said the FBI in Philadelphia received the information about the threat from the FBI in Washington, D.C.
