Fitchburg State’s Figi Among Nation’s Top Goal-scorers
FITCHBURG -- Former Fitchburg State University ice hockey forward Sascha Figi has been named the 2019 NCAA men’s ice hockey Division 3 statistical champion in both goals per game and power-play goals after leading the nation in both categories among D3 schools.
Figi wrapped up his sophomore campaign with a nation-leading .96 goals per contest, while also finishing tops in the country with 12 power-play markers.
Figi witnessed a stellar sophomore season, totaling a conference-best 46 points on 25 scores and 21 helpers in 26 games for Fitchburg State. For his efforts, he was selected the 2019 MASCAC Player of the Year.
In addition, Figi was also named a 2018-19 CCM/AHCA DII/III Ice Hockey All-American as well as collecting All-New England Honors after being selected to the 2018-19 New England DII/III Men’s Ice Hockey All-Star Team.
The Fitchburg State ice hockey team concluded the 2019 season with an overall record of 12-12-2 and a 9-7-2 clip in conference play, en-route to earning the fifth seed in the 2019 MASCAC Ice Hockey Postseason Tournament.
After the season ended, Figi opted to sign a professional contract with HC Thurgau in his native Switzerland, forgoing his final two years of eligibility with Fitchburg State.
HC Thurgau is a franchise in the Swiss League B, playing in Weinfelden, not far from Figi’s hometown. The team’s website lists Figi’s signing as a two-year deal, running through 2020-21.
