EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) _ Kevin Dineen scored the game-winning goal on a breakaway early in the third period Wednesday night to give the Hartford Whalers a 4-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils in a National Hockey League exhibition game.

The victory gave the Whalers a 5-0-1 mark, while dropping New Jersey to 1-2-1. Hartford is the only unbeaten NHL team this preseason.

Jack Brownschidle tallied at 16:42 of the opening period to put Hartford ahead 1-0. Kirk Muller scored the first of his two goals at 10:24 of the middle session to tie the score.

Ron Francis stole a pass near the blueline and fired a 10-foot shot past goalie Karl Friesen to give Hartford a 2-1 edge at 13:40 of the second period and Dineen made it 3-1 at 4:05 of the final period with his breakaway.

Muller scored again with less than six minutes to play, but Greg Malone tallied with 2:03 o play to ice the game for Hartford.

Steve Weeks played the entire game in goal for Hartford, stopping 15 of 17 shots. Glen Resch played the first half of the game for New Jersey and stopped 20 of 21 shots, while Friesen had seven saves in 10 shots.
