NEW YORK (AP) _ Former New York Jets defensive end Mark Gastineau was arrested after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend on a street corner Monday night.

Gastineau's 33-year-old girlfriend was taken to North Shore Hospital following the alleged attack in the Bayside section of Queens, said police spokesman Joseph Cavitolo. She had bruises on her face.

Gastineau, 41, was arrested and charged with third-degree assault after a witness called police.

Police said Gastineau was given an appearance ticket and released pending a court date.

In 1993, Gastineau was sentenced to three years probation and fined $1,400 on a reduced charge stemming from a 1991 drug possession arrest. He allegedly picked up a package of 200 amphetamine pills at an Arizona airport.

Gastineau played defensive end for the Jets from 1979-1988 as a member of the vaunted ``Sack Exchange.'' He was selected for the Pro Bowl four times and was the NFL's defensive player of the year in 1984.
