US stocks are mostly flat in early trading; Xerox gains

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are mostly flat in early trading as traders look ahead to a busy week of corporate earnings and a Federal Reserve meeting.
Xerox rose 1 percent Monday after reporting earnings that were better than analysts were expecting.
Duke Energy fell 1 percent after the company said it would spend almost $5 billion in cash to buy Piedmont Natural Gas. Piedmont soared 35 percent.
The Dow Jones industrial average edged up 11 points to 17,657.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell two points, or 0.1 percent, to 2,072 and the Nasdaq composite gave up three points to 5,029.
Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.07 percent.
