Jurors convict Fort Wayne man of rape

September 13, 2018
Jurors today convicted a Fort Wayne man of raping a disabled woman.   Jared L. Haynes, 48, drove the woman from her home April 9, and raped her, according to court documents. A forensic biologist testified during his trial this week that DNA taken from the woman was consistent with a sample Haynes gave to investigators after he was arrested.   Dressed in a black suit and tie with a white shirt, Haynes showed no emotion as Allen Superior Court Judge Fran Gull read the verdict: guilty on two counts of rape.   Nearby, family and friends of the woman sobbed. Several hugged and shook hands with Allen County deputy prosecutors Tesa Helge and Tom Chaille.   Haynes faces up to 56 years in prison. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Oct. 12.   Haynes did not speak. His attorney, John Bohdan, declined to comment.   For more on this story, see Friday’s print edition of The Journal Gazette or return to www.journalgazette.net after 1 a.m. Friday.   mleblanc@jg.net
