SOUTH POINT, Ohio — Alexander had to make a return trip to Lawrence County to play its scheduled game with South Point Monday but the bus ride home will likely be a pleasant one after the Spartans defeated the Pointers 35-14 at Alumni Field.
Running back Connor Kimbrough and quarterback Kaleb Easley each scored two touchdowns rushing to lead Alexander (2-1). Meanwhile South Point (0-3) had two passing touchdowns from Brody Blackwell in a game that the Pointers had an opportunity to keep close. The contest originally was scheduled for last Friday, but lightning forced the postponement.
Turnovers plagued both teams and caused South Point to fall behind early.
The Pointers fumbled on their first possession at their own 22-yard line. Alexander then needed just 54 seconds for Kimbrough to score the game’s first touchdown.
South Point punted on its next series but Alexander fumbled setting up the Pointers at the Spartans 16-yard-line.
Blackwell then connected with receiver Chance Gunther on a pass caught in the back of the end zone to tie the game.
After Alexander re-captured a touchdown advantage, Blackwell threw the first of two interceptions that set up the Spartans up for Easley’s first touchdown on a 4-yard run, and with a missed extra point, the South Point deficit was 13 points.
Easley’s second touchdown with 2:20 to go in the first half left Alexander poised to cruise to victory.
Blackwell quickly answered, however. The junior quarterback led the Pointers on a 4-play, 61-yard drive in 1:02 before connecting with Marcus Malone on a 33-yard scoring pass to cut the lead at halftime to 28-14.
South Point adjusted its defense in the second half, limiting the big plays from the Alexander ground game and forcing a punt on the Spartans’ opening series in the third quarter.
Blackwell took South Point on a drive that took more than six minutes off the clock but ended with a fumble when the center snap sailed over Blackwell’s head and was recovered by Alexander at the Spartans’ 11.
An Alexander fumble on the next play left the Pointers in Alexander territory but on the first play after the turnover, Blackwell threw his second interception, this time to Michael Kelly who raced down the Spartans sideline for a touchdown that set the score.
Each team now has a short week to prepare for its Friday contests this week.
For South Point, that contest will be an Ohio Valley Conference contest against the defending champion Coal Grove Hornets.
