Report: Deng has Parkinson’s Disease, Receives Hormone Shots

May 1, 1996

HONG KONG (AP) _ Deng Xiaoping, China’s 91-year-old senior leader, suffers from Parkinson’s disease and receives daily hormone injections, a Hong Kong newspaper said today.

The Chinese-language Apple Daily, quoting unnamed sources in Beijing, said Deng has been ordered to stay away from matters of state because his illness is sapping his strength.

It said 30 to 40 doctors care for Deng in round-the-clock shifts.

Deng’s last public appearance was more than two years ago, when he appeared feeble and did not speak.

Deng has long been rumored to be sick or close to death, and some of the rumors have said he had Parkinson’s disease.

The Chinese government gives no information about his health, except to say he is healthy for a man of his age.
