Progressives Re-take City Hall in Burlington, Vt.
BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) _ Ex-Mayor Peter Clavelle was restored to office on Tuesday, two years after his ouster by Mayor Peter Brownell.
Clavelle, on the ballot as an independent, is part of the Progressive Coalition that has dominated politics in Vermont’s largest city since Rep. Bernard Sanders won the mayor’s office 14 years ago.
Brownell’s upset victory two years ago was the only interruption in Progressive rule at City Hall, although the coalition never won control of the City Council.
With up to 200 ballots left to be counted by hand, Clavelle had 43 percent of the vote, Republican Brownell had 41 percent, Democrat Paul Lafayette had 15 percent and several other candidates split the difference.
