April 10, 1989

JERUSALEM (AP) _ A man opened fire tonight with an Israeli-made Uzi submachine gun, killing one Arab and wounding two others near the Jaffa Gate of the Old Walled City of Jerusalem, according to police and hospital reports.

Israel Army Radio said some reports from witnesses indicated the gunman may have been wearing a uniform. It said the assailant ran into the nearby Mamilla quarter, a deserted area of abandoned buildings scheduled for demolition.

Police blocked off the area and began a search.

The shooting took place about 7:45 p.m. at the Jaffa Gate, one of the main entrances to the Old Walled City.

The radio identified the dead man as Mohammed Shawish, a resident of the Old Walled City.

Officials at Bikur Holim Hospital said another Arab, identified as Mahmoud Tarek, 19, of Jerusalem was in critical condition with wounds to the stomach and head. A third man, Mohammed Awash, was being treated for at least three bullet wounds to the arms and legs.
