One Killed in Train Derailment

October 2, 1998

LUDOWICI, Ga. (AP) _ Several cars of an Amtrak train derailed Thursday when the train collided with a loaded log truck off U.S. 301 in southeast Georgia, killing a railroad engineer, authorities said.

The accident occurred about 7:30 p.m. on private property south of the city of Ludowici, said Trooper B.D. Durrence of the State Patrol. Durrence said he had no other information.

The log truck, belonging to Beasley Timber Co. of Hazlehurst, was stuck on the tracks on a dirt road at the time it was struck. It took the train a quarter of a mile to stop, authorities said.

The impact smashed the engineer’s compartment and derailed several passenger cars, but they did not overturn. Diesel fuel leaked from the train’s engine.

Officials of CSX, which owns the track, rescue workers and police were still at the scene late Thursday.

Ludowici is about 25 miles southwest of Savannah.
