Zaleski Brothers Build Scranton Eatery After Growing Up In Family Business

October 10, 2018

Siblings Matt and Jason Zaleski grew up in their parents’ South Side wing joint, watching as they cultivated customer loyalty and success for the family business.

Matt’s wife, Nicole Zaleski, was there, too — working with the family for 13 years even as she earned a degree in accounting. Together with her husband, they saved up a nest egg from wages he earned as a union laborer, and when Jason Zaleski discovered a vacancy in the Ice Box complex where he plays hockey, the trio decided to go for it.

They opened Zaleski Bros. Pizzeria in September 2017 and have spent the last year building their own brand and reputation for fast, fresh American and Italian fare.

While the West Olive Street restaurant offers standards such as pizza (available in New York and Old Forge styles), calzones, strombolis and boneless wings, it also stands out with healthy options, including the Build-Your-Own Salad bar and smoothies made totally with fresh fruit and other ingredients.

Heartier signature menu items include the fresh-cut fries with specialty toppings. Big sellers among those are the Buffalo Chicken, Bacon-Cheddar and Steak & Cheese varieties.

“We don’t just throw them in a container,” Matt Zaleski said of the fries. “There’s a lot of work involved, but that’s why they taste so good. We wanted to do something no one else has to stand out, because there’s so many good restaurants around.”

“Our fries are always better,” his wife agreed.

On the dinner menu, Italian entrees are popular, including the Chicken Francaise, Marsala and Parmesan, as well as the Baked Ziti and Vodka and Alfredo Pasta dishes. Sauces are all homemade, and on Mondays and Tuesdays, Zaleski Bros. offers a buy-one, get-one half-off special that includes a free glass of wine for in-house customers. (Guests are also invited to bring their own drinks for meals at the restaurant, which can seat about 40.)

The pizzeria offers gluten-free options with its pizza and Burrito Bowls, and it makes its own Black Bean Burgers for vegetarians.

Delivery is available to homes and businesses within a two-mile radius (sometimes further for larger orders), and Zaleski Bros. offers off-site catering, too.

It’s a different business than the recognizable Zaleski’s in South Side, and the owners are happy to see so many new faces coming in to try their food, which they’re proud of, Nicole Zaleski said.

“We don’t cut any corners,” her husband promised.
