Man charged in double fatal shooting in Cleveland’s Lee-Harvard neighborhood

CLEVELAND, Ohio – A man is charged in a shooting that left two men dead Thursday in a home in the Cleveland’s Lee-Harvard neighborhood.

Jason Gideons, 39, is charged with two counts of aggravated murder in the shooting on Holly Hill Drive near East 176th Street, according to court records.

Gideons entered the home about 3:20 p.m. and opened fire, killing two men, police said. Investigators have not offered a motive for the shooting.

Resean Lance Payne, 52, was pronounced dead at the scene. Timothy Lanelle Steele, 45, died after he was taken to University Hospitals, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office said.

Cleveland police officers arrested Gideons at a McDonald’s located approximately one mile from the home. They also recovered a handgun, police said.

Gideons remains in custody at the Cuyahoga County Jail. His first appearance in Cleveland Municipal Court has not yet been scheduled.

Gideons’ criminal history includes a 2016 conviction for aggravated assault. He was sentenced to two years on probation in that case, court records say.

Payne and Steele are among three people shot and killed within a 12-hour period in Cleveland. A 24-year-old man was fatally shot early Friday outside a bar in the Union-Miles neighborhood.
