NEW DELHI, India (AP) _ A strong earthquake hit southeastern India early Saturday, but there was no immediate report of any damage or casualties, the meteorological office said.

The epicenter of the 6-magnitude tremor was in the sea in the Andaman area, 1,500 miles southeast of the Indian capital, said J. L. Gautam, an official at the New Delhi Meteorology Department. The quake hit the region at 3:59 a.m. Saturday.

``There was little chance of damage as quake's epicenter was in the sea,'' Gautam said.

The region sees frequent earthquakes, he said.
