Man shot dead at south-central Santa Fe home
A man was shot dead early Monday at a home in the south-central part of the city, Santa Fe police said.
A police spokesman said the man, who was not identified, was shot on the 2300 block of Las Casitas, near Herb Martinez Park.
Police spokesman Greg Gurule said the suspect or suspects are at large and may be armed and dangerous. He also said officers were dispatched to the residence in the past.
He declined to provide other details, saying an investigation is ongoing.
A man who lives in the neighborhood, Frank Tucci, said he opened his front door around 2 a.m. Monday morning to find fire trucks silently pulling in front of his neighbor’s home. Minutes later, Tucci said police cars entered the neighborhood.
Eight hours later, with police blocking off his street and going door-to-door with questions, Tucci said an officer told him it appeared an unknown assailant had entered his neighbor’s yard as the victim was watching television. When the victim went outside to confront the suspect, an altercation occurred and a shot was fired.
“He said, ‘Keep your eyes open for anything,’ ” Tucci said.
Consuelo Roybal, who lives next door to the house where the shooting occurred, said she didn’t hear anything unusual early Monday.
“It’s not that kind of neighborhood,” Roybal said.
But homeowners in the 2800 block of Camino Principe, a street that backs up to the homes on Las Casitas, reported hearing strange sounds early in the morning.
John MacKay said a gunshot woke him up around 2 a.m. He said the shot sounded as if it came from a larger-caliber weapon, which he said he could recognize from his experience with guns. When asked where the sound seemed to come from, he pointed in the direction of the victim’s yard.
Two doors down from MacKay, Billy Herrera said he didn’t hear anything. But his wife, Gloria, came to the room where he was watching TV around 2 a.m.
“She came in and told me, ‘Did you hear that?’ ” Herrera said.
Herrera said his wife slept in the back of the house, closest to the part of the yard that borders where the victim was shot.
He said she had the windows open and told him she heard a woman screaming, then a gunshot.
