Fonseca named Red River Athletic Conference Player of the Week
University of Houston-Victoria shortstop Josh Fonseca has been named as the Red River Athletic Conference Baseball Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 11-17, the conference announced Tuesday.
Fonseca, who played for Pasadena Pan American Little League in Strawberry Park, homered twice and drove in six runs as the Jaguars went 1-2 against NCAA Division II opponent Texas A&M International University.
The senior delivered two run-scoring singles and a solo home run as UHV lost the opener 10-8 last Thursday.
In the second contest, Fonseca cracked a two-run homer and an RBI single to spark a 4-3 victory. For the week, he was 5-for-9 at the plate with four runs scored. Fonseca is tied for the conference lead with five homers on the season and he is the leader in slugging percentage (.933).
A general business major, Fonseca leads the Jaguars with 13 hits, 11 runs scored, five home runs and 13 RBIs over 10 games. He is currently hitting .433 with a .500 on-base percentage.
Fonseca and the Jags will again face off against A&M-International on Wednesday afternoon in a 1 p.m. doubleheader in Laredo.
Additional Player of the Week nominees included Ronnie McBride of LSU-Alexandria, Austin McNicholas of LSU-Shreveport, Jacob Mitchell of Our Lady of the Lake and E.J. Rendon of Southwest.
Clayton Doyle of LSU-Alexandria was named the conference’s Pitcher of the Week for the week of Feb. 11-17.
As a Pasadena Little Leaguer, Fonseca is best known as being on the roster that represented the city when it went up against a group of Japanese Little Leaguers from Pasadena’s sister city in a two-game series in March of 2008.
