DR. HOOK’S RAY SAWYER DIES

NEW YORK (AP) — The man who sang “The Cover of Rolling Stone” has died. Rolling Stone magazine reports Ray Sawyer of Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show died Friday in Daytona Beach, Florida, at the age of 81. Sawyer had lost an eye to a car accident a few years before the band formed, so he was known as “Dr. Hook” because of his eye patch. “Cover of the Rolling Stone” became a hit and landed the band on the magazine’s cover. Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show had other hits with “Sylvia’s Mother” and “When You’re In Love with a Beautiful Woman.” Sawyer left the band in the early 1980s and last performed live in 2015.

DRUMMER HONEY LANTREE OF THE HONEYCOMBS DIES

LONDON (AP) — One of the few female drummers in the early days of rock and roll has died. Britain’s Guardian newspaper reports Honey Lantree of The Honeycombs died Dec. 23 at the age of 75. Details were not given. The Honeycombs hit the top five in 1964 with “Have I The Right.” Lantree trained to be a hairdresser but discovered she had a natural talent to be a drummer. She played in a revival of The Honeycombs in the 1980s.

BRIAN MAY PUTS OUT “NEW HORIZONS” SONG

LAUREL, Md. (AP) — Brian May has released the song he wrote in honor of NASA’s New Horizons mission, which has successfully received information from a space object four billion miles away. May wrote a song called “New Horizons,” his first solo work in more than 20 years. He debuted it at Johns Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland, early New Year’s Day. That was when the New Horizons spacecraft flew by a celestial object nicknamed Ultima Thule (THOO’-lee), which is a billion miles beyond Pluto. May says the mission represents “the spirit of adventure and discovery and inquiry which is inherent in the human spirit.”

NICOLE SCHERZINGER AND THE ART OF THE SELFIE

NEW YORK (AP) — Nicole Scherzinger jokes it would be nice if online photo filters were real. Scherzinger says it would be fun to wake up and just put on a filter instead of makeup and have little stars around you. She says the trick to a good selfie is “lighting and angles.” Scherzinger has a new gig judging people based on their looks -- not that it’s going to help. She’s a panelist on the new TV show “The Masked Singer,” where celebrities where full costumes hiding their identities and panelists must guess who it is. The other panelists are Ken Jeong, Robin Thicke and Jenny McCarthy, with Nick Cannon as host. It premieres tonight on Fox.
