Hearing delayed on SAISD school’s historic status
The Historic and Design Review Commission has postponed a hearing, originally planned for Wednesday, to consider a possible historic designation for the unused Beacon Hill Elementary School on Ashby Street.
The San Antonio Independent School District requested additional time to gather information, said Leslie Price, school district spokeswoman. SAISD applied over the summer to demolish the century-old building, but approval is less likely if the building is deemed historic. The HDRC is expected to consider the issue at its Nov. 7 meeting.
Beacon Hill Elementary has been vacant since 1999, when Beacon Hill Academy opened next door. SAISD in the spring commissioned an engineering evaluation that concluded the old school building is not salvageable. The city subsequently requested a report from a different firm, which contradicted the first report.
