LOCAL COLLEGE ROUNDUP: Cougar Baseball Sweeps Wilkes

Playing at the University of Scranton, Misericordia baseball swept a doubleheader with Wilkes on Saturday to open MAC Freedom play. The Cougars (10-5) took the games by 5-1 and 5-3 scores.

Steve Weisensee and Billy Kerwien each had two hits with RBIs in Game 1.

Ian McCole threw a complete-game one-hitter with five strikeouts.

In Game 2, with the game tied in the bottom of the sixth, Weisensee walked with the bases loaded and Tyler Holzapfel brought home a run with a sacrifice fly.

Bryan Nifenecker had two RBIs for Wilkes (2-9).

King’s sweeps DeSales

At Lipo Field, King’s swept DeSales in a MAC Freedom Doubleheader 6-4 and 11-3.

Game 1 was tied at 4 in the sixth inning when Dan Hartson and Matt Mellinger produced RBI singles for the Monarchs (4-6). Sean McKee drove in two runs in the game.

King’s broke open Game 2 with seven runs in the third inning. McKee tripled and drove in four more runs in the game, while Christian Pack drove in three.


At DeSales, King’s dropped a pair of heartbreakers to open MAC Freedom play, 6-5 and 2-1.

In Game 1, King’s tied DeSales with RBI singles from Gabby Leary and Kristian Koc in the top of the seventh, only for DeSales to score the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.

Game 2 saw King’s take a 1-0 lead into the seventh, only to have DeSales plate two in the bottom for another walk-off win.

Marisa Mauro had an RBI for King’s (3-6).

Men’s Lacrosse

Patrick Luzzi had five goals, part of a seven-point day, as Misericordia scored an 18-6 road win over Mount Saint Mary College.

Nick Torzilli, Carson Venis, Allen Thomas and Kyle Vandenberg all had two-goal games. Torzilli and Vandenberg also had three assists for the Cougars (3-1).

Women’s Lacrosse

Sierra Duman scored six goals and had a career-high seven points in Wilkes’ 20-17 road win over Old Westbury.

Ashley Burkhardt added four goals for the Colonels (3-1), while Kyra Boccio had three goals and three assists. Laurea Bayzick also scored three goals.

Men’s Volleyball

At home, Wilkes split two matches besting St. Joseph’s College of Brooklyn 3-0 but falling to Medaille 3-0.

In the win, Ethan Speicher led with 10 kills. Daniel Sales had 36 assists. Sales added 15 more assists against Medaille. Piotrowski lead the offense with seven kills.

Misericordia swept

At Arcadia, Misericordia dropped a pair of 3-0 matches to Arcadia and Stevenson.

Ross had 12 kills combined in the two matches. Dylan Sellitti had 28 total assists.

Men’s Tennis

Wilkes picked up a 7-2 win at Muhlenberg on Saturday.

The Colonels won all three doubles matches and picked up singles wins from Courtney Murphy, Chris Maderitz, Jonathan White and Larry Scartz.
