Hundreds of farmers demanding funds march in Warsaw

February 19, 2015

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Hundreds of farmers are marching in Warsaw to demand government compensation for crops lost to wild boar and for profits reduced by Russia’s embargo against some Polish meat and dairy products.

With sirens and banners, they are walking Thursday from the Parliament building to the office of Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz, where they plan to put up tents — without permission — and pressure for negotiations.

They hoped for some 10,000 participants in this latest development in a weeks-long protest that also demands the resignation of Agriculture Minister Marek Sawicki.

The farmers represent an organization that left negotiations with Sawicki last week. Leaders of other organizations are continuing the talks.
