Blues museum to call St. Louis home, sweet home

October 13, 2013

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Chicago is readily and widely embraced as the home of the blues. The genre’s godfather penned its anthem, “Sweet Home Chicago,” and the Chicago Blues Festival draws more than 100,000 fans each summer.

But come next year, the National Blues Museum will settle in 300 miles (480 kilometers) to the south in St. Louis.

Organizers of the project say St. Louis has its own deserving musical history, including hometown heroes Ike Turner, Albert King and of course, Chuck Berry.

Similar blues shrines have struggled to get off the ground in Chicago. But St. Louis organizers rallied leaders and musicians in Chicago, Memphis and Clarksville, Mississippi, as well as contemporary blues artists to make their case.

Music historian Robert Santelli says the key to the museum’s viability is educational programs.
