Steel Output Fell 1.8 Percent in Week
NEW YORK (AP) _ Steel production fell to 1.838 million tons in the week ended Nov. 12, a decrease of 1.8 percent from the previous week’s 1.871 million tons, the American Iron and Steel Institute reported Monday.
The industry’s production amounted to 85.7 percent of capacity during the week, compared with 87.3 percent in the previous week.
Estimated figures for the year to date showed production at 86.422 million net tons, an increase of 14.8 percent from the 75.281 million net tons in the previous year.
Production so far this year used 89.1 percent of capacity, compared with 77.6 percent a year earlier.
Net tonnage by district for the week ended Nov. 12: Northeast Coast, 260,000; Pittsburgh, 207,000; Youngstown, 100,000; Lake Erie, 145,000; Detroit, 160,000; Chicago, 456,000; Midwest, 191,000; Southern, 226,000; and Western, 93,000.
