Police asking for help locating possible hit-and-run witness

August 9, 2018

The Aiken Department of Public Safety is asking for the public’s help locating a potential witness to the fatal hit-and-run on York Street last week.

Investigators believe a man caught on a security camera at a York Street convenience store was near the roadway when the incident occurred on Aug. 3, according to a release.

Christopher Holmes, 33, of Aiken, was struck and killed by a vehicle around 2:30 a.m., said Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.

Holmes was attempting to cross York Street near the Crosland Park subdivision on foot when he was struck by the vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle did not stop, fleeing the area before police arrived.

Holmes was pronounced dead at the scene from blunt force trauma he sustained in the collision, Carlton said.

Investigators are continuing to review surveillance footage from the area in an attempt to determine the type of vehicle involved, but police still believe the vehicle involved is a dark colored SUV with possible damage to the front end.

Anyone with information about the collision or the individual pictured is asked to call CrimeStoppers of the Midlands at 888-CRIME-SC (888-274-6372). Callers will remain anonymous and will be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
