Man Convicted in Daughter’s Death

January 19, 2001

UNIONTOWN, Pa. (AP) _ A man who stomped his mentally retarded adopted daughter to death and burned the body in a pit was sentenced to life in prison Friday.

James Gillin, 53, was convicted of first-degree murder and other charges in the 1992 slaying of the 25-year-old woman, Helen.

Prosecutors said Gillin was having sex with her and his wife, Roberta, had found out.

The prosecution’s chief witness was Gillins’ 31-year-old biological daughter Mary Jo Overly, who said she saw her father stomping on her sister and later saw the body in a fire pit.

Roberta Gillin was charged with homicide, but prosecutors said they would recommend dropping the charge because she had cooperated with police.
