NORFOLK, Va. (AP) _ Reginald Finney scored 10 of his 16-second half points during a five-minute span on Thursday to lead Florida A&M to an 87-77 victory over North Carolina A&T in the first round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament.
The Rattlers (14-13) were down 53-48 with just under 10 minutes left before Finney went on his scoring spree. He scored 10 of A&M’s next 15 points in a 15-2 spurt that put the Rattlers ahead 63-55 with 5:19 left.
Finney also hit four free throws and Kenny Davis, who had 28 points, added three down the stretch to seal the victory.
North Carolina A&T, winners of seven of the last nine MEAC tournaments, fell to 17-10.
A&T did challenge in the final minutes. With 53 seconds left and A&M ahead 76-74, the Aggies gained possession on a turnover. But an A&T coach was out of the coahcing box, and the team was hit with a technical foul. Davis made both free throws to give A&M a 78-74 lead.
Kelvin Daniels led Florida A&M with 28 points and 15 rebounds.
Florida A&M advanced to Friday’s semifinals against the winner of Thursday night’s game between Coppin State and Bethune-Cookman.
