Local Roundup: Blomgren, Hedlund Lead Lunenburg Over Ayer Shirley

LUNENBURG -- Grace Hedlund and Lauren Blomgren scored 12 points each to lead the Lunenburg girls’ basketball team to a 54-46 win at home over Ayer Shirley on Friday.

Emily Dumford added 10 points, including nine during a crucial fourth-quarter stretch, as the Blue Knights (2-0) rallied to erase a six-point halftime deficit.

Hayley Sheriff scored 17 points to lead Ayer Shirley (0-2), while teammate Stepha Hart finished with 10 points.

The Bulldogs (1-1) rebounded from a loss to Leominster High in the opening round of the Red Raider Holiday Tournament at Athol High School with a convincing win over St. Mary, of Westfield, in the consolation game.

Joseph Novelli (13 points), Connor Brassard (13 points), Cinceir Mills (11 points) and Tom McNamara (10 points, 5 rebounds) each scored in double figures for Monty Tech. For the Bulldogs, Novelli and Dante Lajara (9 points) were named to the all-tournament team.

Leominster won the night’s championship game, 82-44, over host Athol. Details from the contest were not available as of press time.

Jack Richards made 10 3-pointers on his way to a 35-point night as the Chieftains improved to 2-1 with the victory. John Duros (12 points) and Danny McNulty (10 points) also scored in double figures for Nashoba Regional.

Lunenburg 59

Ayer Shirley 57

Jason Reynolds scored 14 points and sunk the go-ahead layup with 26 seconds left as the Blue Knights (1-3) earned their first victory of the season. Nick Ouelette (12 points), Christopher Costitch (12 points) and Lucas Yourk (11 points) also played well for Lunenburg. C.J. Holmes scored 27 points as Ayer Shirley opened the season with the loss on the road.
