Turkish Floods Kill 12

May 23, 1998

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) _ Floods that swept across northwestern Turkey stranded 11 Americans for three days before authorities were able to clear the roads Saturday, Turkish officials said.

A landslide that closed the only road in the area trapped the American tourists staying in bungalows near scenic Yedigoller lake. The two couples and seven children were in good condition when they finally were able to drive out, according to the prime minister’s office.

Heavy rains caused flooding in several northwestern towns, killing 12 people over the past three days. Troops used rubber boats and helicopters to evacuate 514 people from outlying villages in the region.

Rising waters inundated thousands of houses and destroyed bridges, roads and railway lines in northwestern and parts of southern Turkey.

On Saturday, international relief workers were distributing food in the stricken region.
