Yacht smashes into rocks off Spanish island, killing 3
MADRID (AP) — Officials say three people were killed and three others injured when a leisure yacht smashed against the rocky northeastern coast of the Balearic Island of Formentera in the Mediterranean Sea.
The 10-meter (33-foot) yacht had been anchored just off the village of Es Calo when strong winds and heavy seas dragged its anchors and destroyed it against the rocks on Friday, a regional government spokesman said.
A man and two women were killed in the shipwreck, but local residents were able to pull two other men and a woman to safety.
All six were Belgian nationals. Those who survived were receiving medical treatment and would soon to be released from hospital, said the spokesman, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to be cited by name.
