4 Puerto Rico policemen sentenced in federal corruption case

January 29, 2015

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Four Puerto Rico police officers have been sentenced after pleading guilty to robbery, selling drugs and manipulating court records.

The U.S. Justice Department said in a statement Thursday that three of the officers were sentenced to more than five years in prison and a fourth to seven years.

The officers were accused of entering the homes of criminals and stealing items including money and drugs. They also were accused of planting evidence, making false arrests and seeking money in exchange for releasing victims, among other things.

Twelve other people charged in the case were sentenced in December.

Puerto Rico’s police department is undergoing a federally mandated 10-year reform following accusations of illegal killings, corruption and civil rights violations.
