Mount St. Mary’s Md. 92, Long Island University 74

EMMITSBURG, Md. (AP) _ Gerben Van Dorpe scored 20 points to lead Mount St. Mary’s to a 92-74 victory over Long Island University in the Northeast Conference opener for both teams on Saturday.

The Mountaineers (5-4, 1-0) held the lead throughout most of the first half, with the Blackbirds (3-6, 0-1) staying close. Mount St. Mary’s led 48-40 at halftime.

With about 12 minutes remaining in the game, Jeff Balistrere scored a three-pointer and a jumper and Chris McGuthrie added two more three-pointers to put the Mountaineers ahead 71-58.

Balistrere and McGuthrie scored 16 apiece, Riley Inge had 15 and Silas Cheung scored 11 for Mount St. Mary’s.

McGuthrie’s 16 points vaulted him into second place on the Mount’s all-time scoring list with 1,841 points. He began the game in fourth place, but passed up Mike Cataline (1838) and former NBA player and coach Fred Carter (1840) to move into second. Jack Sullivan set the school’s all-time record with 2672 points from 1953 to 1957.

Picinic and Dave Masciale paced Long Island with 20 points each. Jason Feeley added 10 points.
