Car Driven By Student Driver Hits Nephew, Friend, House
NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) _ A car driven by a student driver suddenly shot forward and hit the driver’s year-old nephew and a family friend before slamming into the living room of a vacant townhouse, police said.
The child, Mario Andres Diaz, was listed in critical condition today at Plantation General Hospital. He was playing in front of the home when he was hit Sunday night.
Maria Ruiz, who had been watching the child, also was struck. She was reported in critical condition today at HCA Northwest Regional Hospital.
Patricia Burbano, 24, who lives with the boy’s parents, leaped out of the car and ran to the victims after the vehicle came to rest, witnesses said.
″The car backed out of the driveway in front of the house and, all of a sudden, the tires starting screaming and the car tore forward,″ said Terry Moses, who was watching from her lawn across the street.
Ms. Burbano had a learner’s permit allowing her to practice driving. She escaped injury and was cited for traffic violations, said police Sgt. Paul Mikols.
