MAR DEL PLATA, Argentina (AP) _ Curtis Withers of Charlotte scored 15 points and Terrence Roberts of Syracuse added 14 as the United States rallied from a 13-point deficit to beat Slovenia 83-79 on Wednesday in the preliminary round of the men’s Under 21 World Championships.

The U.S. team (5-0) advanced to Friday’s quarterfinals and will play the winner of Wednesday night’s Canada-Israel game.

Withers and Roberts were effective inside for the United States, which shot 40 percent overall (34-for-84) but was 3-for-22 from 3-point range.

Slovenia’s Miha Fon missed an off-balance 3-point attempt at the buzzer that could have forced overtime.

Slovenia (2-3) scored the first seven points of the game and led 26-13 after one quarter.

The U.S. team turned to its defense and finished with 25 steals while forcing 30 turnovers. Roberts’ putback with 3:43 to go gave the Americans a 79-70 lead, but Slovenia went on a 7-0 run that ended with a steal and layup by Rajon Rondo of Kentucky with 25 seconds to play.

Sasa Zagorac scored 15 points for Slovenia.
