July 20, 1986

TOKYO (AP) _ A 99-year-old man, accompanied by family members, conquered on Sunday the summit of Mt. Fuji, Japan’s highest mountain, the Kyodo News Service reported.

Teiichi Igarashi, who had reached the 12,461-foot peak 10 times previously, renewed his record as the oldest person to climb the picturesque, dormant volcano 62 miles west of Tokyo.

Igarashi, who turns 100 on Sept. 21, was accompanied by his son Toshiichi, 61, daughter Fumiyo, 64, and grandson Kenichi Haga, 27, the agency said.

About 20 other climbers congratulated him on the peak and Kyodo quoted Igarashi as saying, ″My key to success is the strong will to climb. At the summit, I prayed for a long life for the people who cheered me there.″
