VIENNA, Austria (AP) _ Shoppers in Albania can now pay with Eurocard and Mastercard - the first credit cards to be introduced in Europe’s last stronghold of hard-line Communism, the credit card company said Thursday.
According to the statement issued by Eurocard International, the cards are to be accepted first at the airport and two hotels in the Albanian capital Tirana, and at one hotel in the port city of Durres.
Cardholders can draw cash against their cards at 26 outlets of Albania’s national bank, and the network will be expanded gradually, the statement said.
The national bank will be responsible for processing transactions and issuing cards in Albania, it said.
Albania has recently begun making cautious moves toward ending its self- imposed isolation but has so far shunned major political and economic reform.
