PRESTO, Pa. (AP) _ For the second time in its five-year history, the Mario Lemieux Celebrity Golf Tournament had play canceled because of bad weather.
Tom Grealish, president and executive director of the Mario Lemieux Foundation, notified players on the soaked course at the Club at Nevillewood about 2 p.m. Thursday that forecasts of continuing heavy rain would stop play for the day.
Bad weather forced play to be canceled in the tournament’s first year as well.
``I think we’ve gotten two or three inches of rain, and the course is soaking wet,″ Grealish said. ``I was out on the 15th hole and there was standing water on the golf course.″
Only 26 golfers teed off and none completed a round. Former NFL quarterbacks Stan Humphries and Mark Rypien led Thursday’s play at 7-under par. Humphries played 11 holes, while Rypien got through 10.
Michael Jordan was 2-under through six, while Lemieux and defending champ Rick Rhoden were even through six and four holes, respectively.
Thursday’s scores do not count in the actual competition, which begins Friday and lasts three days.
