Foster scores 32, No. 25 Creighton gets past UT Arlington
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Marcus Foster scored 22 of his 32 points in the first half, and No. 25 Creighton beat UT Arlington 90-81 on Monday night for its fourth straight win.
Foster made 8 of 10 shots in the first half as Creighton opened a 52-32 lead at the break.
Khyri Thomas added 16 points and Mitch Ballock scored 14 for the Bluejays (9-2), who came in averaging 90.2 points per game, tied for eighth nationally and tops among Big East teams.
Kevin Hervey had 24 points and 11 rebounds and Kaelon Wilson scored 15 points for the Mavericks (8-4).
UT Arlington didn’t offer much resistance as Creighton opened an early 11-4 lead. The Bluejays then missed six straight shots, allowing the Mavericks took their only lead at 13-11 on a basket by Johnny Hamilton.
Thomas, Ronnie Harrell, Ty-Shon Alexander, Foster and Ballock all made 3-pointers over a six-minute burst that gave Creighton a 31-18 advantage.
Creighton made 8 of 17 3-pointers in the first half and shot 50 percent overall (19-for-38) as it led by as many as 25.
Davion Turner sank two 3-pointers as UT Arlington made a push to start the second half, pulling within 57-44 with 16:19 remaining. It was down to 61-52 after an 8-0 run that included Creighton tipping a ball into the Mavericks’ basket.
Creighton collected itself with the help of two baskets from Martin Krampelj and a 3-pointer by Thomas to build its advantage back to 71-57. Foster’s two-handed dunk made it 85-73 with 3:14 remaining.
UT Arlington hosts Cal Poly on Thursday.
Creighton hosts USC Upstate on Wednesday before its Big East opener Dec. 28 at Seton Hall.
