Jalabert Wins Men’s Time Trial

October 9, 1997

SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain (AP) _ Laurent Jalabert of France won the men’s individual time trial at the World Cycling Championships Thursday.

Although Jalabert is the world’s top-ranked road-racing cyclist, his victory was considered a surprise because time trials were not his strong point.

The Frenchman completed the 26-mile course in 52 minutes and 1 seconds, only 3 seconds ahead of runner-up Sergei Gontchar of Ukraine, who won the silver medal.

``I never thought I could win a medal in the time-trial as this race was a training for Sunday’s road race.″ the 28-year-old Jalaabert said.

Pre-rac and winner of the Tour of Spain, Alex Zulle, had to change his front wheel at the start of the race and then had another tire go flat. He finished 11th, 2 minutes, 15 seconds behind Jalabert.

``It has been the worst day of my professional career″ said Zulle, ``I have had bad days, but none as bad as this.″
