Angry Motorists Trap Reckless Trucker, Hold Him for Police

September 27, 1989

CHAZY, N.Y. (AP) _ Motorists got so fed up with a reckless driver that they took matters into their own hands, boxing in his truck at a truckstop and holding him until police arrived.

A tractor-trailer rig was weaving in and out of traffic Sunday on the Adirondack Northway near the town of Chazy, tailgating and nearly running some cars off the road, said Trooper Kevin Triller.

After several miles, five motorists - all strangers - pulled over, discussed the situation and decided to act, Triller said.

One went to summon police while the other four sped northward and caught up with the truck just south of the Canadian border.

When the truck exited the highway and drove to a nearby truckstop, the motorists boxed in the truck and kept the driver, Rene Fortier, 31, of Mercier, Quebec, until police arrived and arrested him.

The motorists and their passengers, about 10 people in all, then went to Champlain Town Court to file charges. Fortier pleaded guilty to speeding and was fined $217, Triller said.
