Protester arrested for blocking entry to prison system HQ

June 27, 2019

MILFORD, Mass. (AP) — An immigrant rights activist has been arrested while trying to block entry to the Massachusetts prisons department headquarters.

State police say a Rhode Island woman was charged with trespassing and resisting arrest Thursday morning. She’d chained herself to a concrete blockade in front of Department of Correction headquarters in Milford. The protest prevented traffic coming in and out of the building for about three hours.

Police say another protester voluntarily unchained himself and other protesters remained peacefully in a designated protest area.

The FANG Collective says it organized the event to call on the department to end its agreement to house detained immigrants for federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.

A department spokesman says the agency recently renewed its annual agreement with ICE.
