MAAC Drops Ice Hockey Program
EDISON, N.J. (AP) _ The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference dropped its ice hockey program Monday, and the schools in the league only for that sport withdrew from the conference.
The MAAC sponsored ice hockey for five seasons beginning in 1998-1999, and will have 25 sports for the 2003-2004 academic year.
Eight teams formed the MAAC Hockey League in 1998-99, including three full-time MAAC members: Canisius, Fairfield and Iona. The five original associate members were American International, Connecticut, Holy Cross, Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart.
Bentley and Mercyhurst were added in 1999-00 and the addition of Army in 2000-01 increased membership to 11 teams, the number the league operated at for three seasons.
