Smoke rises from a small wildfire Friday afternoon that is burning south of the intersection of Highway 20 and Gibraltar Road.

UPDATES with fire contained as of nightfall.

A fire spread over about 15 acres Friday afternoon, threatening several houses off Highway 20 near Gibralter Road and Thomas Lane near Anacortes.

Firefighters had it contained by nightfall, and no homes were damaged.

Fire officials indicated the fire was suspicious and under investigation.

A state Department of Natural Resources helicopter scooped water from nearby Campbell Lake and dropped it on the fire, which was particularly necessary because parts of the blaze weren’t easy to reach.

“It’s just really hard to get to because of all that deep brush,” DNR spokesman Joe Smillie said Friday afternoon

Mount Erie Fire District 11 fire officer Jordan Pollack said at least a dozen fire agencies assisted, and crews would keep watch overnight to make sure flames did not reach any of the homes.

Natural Resources is expected to take over Saturday, he said.
