Watch live: Silicon Valley congressman talks job creation, retraining in digital age at City Club of Cleveland

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Blue and white-collar workers alike worry about the future of their careers as automation advances, including artificial intelligence.

Sen. Ro Khanna, who represents Silicon Valley in California, will speak at the City Club of Cleveland about job creation and retraining in the digital age. Khanna supports a “universal job guarantee,” where the government steps in to ensure people have access to employment.

Khanna, in a 2018 interview with Mic, explained his plan would involve the federal government subsidizing a certain number of short-term jobs at private companies. The time spent in those government-funded roles would allow employees to train for permanent employment without costing the company money.

By creating these jobs in the private sector, the government wouldn’t go toe-to-toe with businesses by creating jobs, Khanna said.

The idea of a universal job guarantee was first proposed by former President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Watch live Khanna discuss the problems facing the work force and technology at 12:30 p.m. in the video viewer above.
