Merck-Medco to Close Plant
WILMINGTON, Mass. (AP) _ Merck-Medco Rx Services will close its plant here in March, eliminating about 500 jobs at the pharmacy.
Merck-Medco reported that it recently lost an important account and that its lease on the Wilmington plant expires in March. The company has notified its 531 workers of the decision to close and offered some employees jobs at other Merck locations.
The company has operated in Wilmington for 10 years and employs about 14,000 nationwide. The company has plants in 13 other states.
Merck-Medco is a subsidiary of Merck & Co. Inc. and supplies prescription medications and benefit management services to large companies, HMOs, Blue Cross/Blue Shield plans, insurance carriers and local, state and federal employee programs.
