F1 team Caterham fires technical director Smith

MONTMELO, Spain (AP) — Formula One team Caterham has fired technical director Mark Smith and named a committee in his place.

The struggling team has appointed a committee consisting of John Iley, Jody Egginton and Gerry Hughes, who will report directly to team principal Cyril Abiteboul.

Abiteboul says “we are not happy with our current performance levels and John, Jody and Gerry, with my full support and that of our shareholders, staff and partners, are the right people to help take us forward.”

Caterham made the announcement on Saturday before qualifying at the Spanish Grand Prix.

The British-based team has owned by Malaysia businessman Tony Fernandes has yet to win a point in 43 races since its founding in 2012.
