Genoa police raising money for No-Shave November

November 24, 2018

GENOA – This November, K-9 Kane is not the only hairy member of the Genoa Police Department.

All members of the department have been raising funds for No-Shave November, which continues until the end of the month. The police officers – and K-9 Kane – haven’t shaved since they were clean-shaven free-of-charge by Herron & Co. Barbers in Genoa.

No-Shave November is a web-based, nonprofit organization devoted to growing cancer awareness and raising funds to support cancer prevention, research and education.

“We all have been affected by cancer in one way or another, or we know someone with cancer,” Sgt. Greg Edwards said. “We want to help in any way we can.”

During November, each officer has be trying to “bail” themselves out by raising $300 toward their team goal. As of Nov. 19, $3,925 has been raised toward the police department’s goal of $5,000.

“We’re very appreciative of everyone that has donated, will donate or is thinking about donating,” Edwards said. “It’s just a fun way to raise money for a good cause.”

Part-time police officer Robert Barnett said that having a family friend going through brain cancer and another going through colon cancer was a reason why he decided to participate in No-Shave November.

“It’s hard to find someone that hasn’t been affected by cancer,” Barnett said. “It’s a way to show that you don’t fight cancer alone. We’re here for you so you don’t have to fight it alone. We wanted to show the softer side of the police department. This is a good way to get the community involved and understand we’re all family, we’re all human.”

Barnett said he has been grateful for the community’s charitable contributions because “every penny, every dollar helps make a difference for cancer research.”

“It’s been a full community effort, including help from the Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce and [its Executive Director] Cortney Strohacker,” he said. “To show that a small community like ours can raise $5,000 for cancer research, to help other people they might not even know, is amazing. We’re a small community with big hearts.”
