Celebration planned Thursday for veterans home in Preston
A community celebration will take place Thursday in Preston to thank local veterans and residents for their support of the planned Fillmore County Veterans Home facility.
Starting at 4 p.m. at the proposed site address, 1150 Overlook Drive, State Rep. Greg Davids, R-Preston, said speeches will be given and questions will be answered about the facility and building process.
“We’ve been working as hard as we can and working together to get this done,” Davids said. “This is going to be something to help and serve those who helped serve our country.”
He will be joined by Minnesota House Veterans Affairs Division Chairman Bob Deter, R-Forest Lake, Senate Veterans Committee Chairman Bruce Anderson, R-Buffalo Township, and Sen. Jeremy Miller, R-Winona, and Dave Senjem, R-Rochester, at the event.
According to Preston city administrator Joe Hoffman, a total of $1,054,312.42 has been raised from pledges and donations so far.
Almost $200,000 was raised by 350 individuals and organizations.
“We’re humbled by the response from across the region,” Hoffman said. “It certainly shows just how strongly people feel about providing proper care for our aging veterans.”
Donations will continue to be accepted and any donations received by March will be matched 2-1 by the federal government. Pledge cards can be found on the city’s website at prestonmn.org.
