ST. LOUIS (AP) _ Mark Filla scored the only goal Wednesday to lead the Midwest to an opening-round 1-0 victory over the West in the Puma Cup Invitational.

Filla of St. Charles, Mo., took a pass from Justin Stone of Springfield, Ill., and beat West goalkeeper Grant Brown, of Lake Oswego, Ore., just more than 14 minutes into the game. Midwest goalie Jon Lowery of Apple Valley, Minn., held off a second-half surge by the West to record the shutout.

In its third year, the Puma Cup is the country’s only boys All-Star soccer tournament featuring the nation’s top high school senior scholar-athletes. The tournament, which benefits the National Soccer Hall of Fame, is a round-robin event with four regional teams.

Earlier in the day, the South defeated the East 1-0, with A.J. Sauer of Spring, Texas, scoring the only goal at 34:55. Goalies Walter Valesky of Peachtree City, Ga., and Michael Zingale of Tallahassee Fla., recorded the shutout.
