MLC football team has 2 honored by UMAC
ST. PAUL - Martin Luther College football players Josh VonDeylen and Alec Bergmann were each named Second Team All-UMAC by the conference on Wednesday.
VonDeylen earned the honor as a punter after averaging 38.5 yards per punt on 46 attempts. He finished the season with 13 punts inside the 20-yard-line (tied for second in the conference), and also forced nine fair catches (third-most in the conference).
VonDeylen also started in the defensive backfield this season for MLC, and recorded a team-high four interceptions to go with two fumble recoveries and 41 tackles.
Bergmann started for most of his four-year career, and helped pave the way for some of the most prolific running games in program history. This season, Bergmann helped the Knights average 190.4 rushing yards per game, second-best in the UMAC.
Bergmann also served as one of three captains on this year’s team.
Senior defensive end Dan Schmidt was named the MLC recipient of the Sportsmanship Award, given to one player on each team who best exemplifies sportsmanship during the season.
