One Dies In Bus Crash, More Than Two Dozen Injured

February 11, 1986

DES PLAINES, Ill. (AP) _ A car and bus collided on a highway in rush-hour traffic Monday, killing one person and injuring at least 28 others, authorities said.

The car apparently strayed into the lane occupied by the oncoming Regional Transportation Authority bus and collided with it, said Cook County Sheriff’s Lt. Ronald Jackson.

The driver of the car, Walter Domonchuk, 67, of Park Ridge was killed, Jackson said.

″He was said to be driving erratically on the wrong side of the street,″ Jackson said about Domonchuk, who was alone in the car. All the injured people were on the bus.

Nineteen people were being treated for injuries at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, said spokeswoman Karen Kalina. Two of the injured were in critical condition, she said.

Seven people were treated at Holy Family Hospital in Des Plaines, said spokeswoman Claire Wade. The three people who were admitted, including bus driver David Chapman, 48, of Des Plaines, were listed in good condition, she said.

Two other injured people were taken to Resurrection Hospital in Chicago, but neither was reported in serious condition, said spokesman Warren Nelson.
